Five things small towns can do to attract more tourists

small town

Growing tourism in small towns requires careful planning and new ideas. Here are five key things small towns can do to attract more tourists:

(1) Develop unique attractions:

Identify and develop unique attractions that set your town apart from others. This could include historical sites, natural landmarks, cultural festivals, or outdoor recreational opportunities. Ensure these attractions are well-maintained and properly marketed to draw visitors. An example of a small town that has successfully developed unique attractions to set itself apart is Solvang, a charming Danish-inspired town located in Santa Barbara County, California.

(2) Invest in infrastructure and amenities:

Improve the town's infrastructure and amenities to make it more appealing to tourists. This might involve upgrading roads, sidewalks, and public transportation. Also, invest in parks, public spaces, and facilities like restrooms, visitor centers, and picnic areas. An example of a small town that has improved its infrastructure and amenities to become more appealing to tourists is Asheville, North Carolina. While Asheville itself is not a tiny town, it has undertaken significant efforts to enhance its tourism infrastructure and appeal to visitors

(3) Promote local culture and heritage:

Celebrate and showcase the town's local culture and heritage. Organize cultural events, heritage festivals, and art exhibitions to give visitors a sense of the town's identity and history. Encourage local artisans and businesses to create products that reflect the town's unique character. An example of a town that has done this is Beechworth, in the state of Victoria, Australia. Beechworth is known for its rich history, charming streetscapes, and commitment to preserving its heritage.

(4) Marketing and promotion:

Invest in marketing and promotion efforts to raise awareness about your town as a tourist destination. Utilize social media, create a user-friendly website, and collaborate with travel bloggers and influencers to spread the word. Consider participating in travel and tourism expos to reach a wider audience. Óbidos is an example of a small picturesque medieval town in Portugal that has invested in marketing and promotion efforts to raise awareness about it as a tourist destination.

(5) Support local businesses:

Foster an environment that supports local businesses, including restaurants, shops, and accommodations. Encourage businesses to offer high-quality products and services that cater to tourists. Create partnerships between local businesses and tourism organizations to provide special packages or discounts for visitors. An example of small town known for fostering an environment that supports local businesses, including restaurants, shops, and accommodations, is Westport, located in County Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. Westport has gained recognition for its vibrant and thriving local economy, which is driven by a strong emphasis on supporting independent businesses.

Additionally, small towns should consider working with regional or national tourism boards and organizations for additional support and exposure. Building a strong sense of community pride and involvement in tourism initiatives can also go a long way in making tourists feel welcome and encouraging repeat visits. Keep in mind that sustainable tourism practices, which prioritize the long-term well-being of the town and its environment, should be integral to your tourism plan.
