Great planning can enable excellent project delivery

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

Just look at the example of the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Portugal

This bridge was constructed in only 18 months...following 18 months of planning!

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Tagus River in Parque das Nações in Lisbon, Portugal. It was constructed to reduce congestion on Lisbon's 25 de Abril Bridge and allow North-South traffic to bypass the capital city.

Construction began in 1995 and the bridge was opened in 1998 in time for Expo 98 World Fair.

In 1998, the Vasco da Gama Bridge was the longest in Europe at 12.345 km, cost around $1.1 billion to build and used approximately 3,300 workers.

This bridge was fully constructed in 18 months after 18 months of careful project planning. As with all plans, there were risks and challenges, however the final result was impressive.

Physical infrastructure projects like the Vasco de Gama bridge are a great reminder of what can be achieved with good planning.
